Harrison’s Heroes: Clothing Designer Ashley DeRamus

If you need to know more about Down Syndrome, watch this story. Kids with DS can do anything they set their minds to, and Mr. Harrison certainly has a mind of his own. I hope he can someday run a business just like Ashley DeRamus. She is definitely one of Harrison’s Heroes.

Harrison’s Heroes: Agnieszka & Magdalena

I was so excited when this video came across my Facebook feed. A 10-year-old British girl created a video featuring her 7-year-old sister who happens to have Down Syndrome. I love how the production shows the love these beautiful sisters share, and I am incredibly impressed by their talent. Thanks for rocking that extra chromosome for all the world to see! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0ZF1rknJU-U

Harrison’s Heroes: Tim Harris of Tim’s Place

As we wrap up celebration of World Down Syndrome Day (March 21), I am catching up on stories in the news about people with Down Syndrome. The story of Tim Harris of Tim’s place has been especially intriguing. Tim, a 27-year-old man with Down Syndrome, owns and operates a restaurant in New Mexico and made news headlines across the country last week.  Click here to view an article about Tim’s Place on the Today Show’s website.

However, NPR’s coverage of the Tim’s Place story stole my heart. In an interview with Tim and his father, the public radio station let us hear Tim’s story in his own voice…and his own words. I heard the story last week while getting ready for work, and it brought tears to my eyes. As I listened again writing this post, I am again crying knowing that Harrison has the whole world in front of him, just like Tim.

Click here to hear why Tim is my superhero…in Tim’s very own words.

Harrison’s Heroes: Jewelry Designer Lindsey Rose Roy (Profiling Adults with Down Syndrome)

LindseyRoy2
At only 22 years old, Lindsey Rose Roy is not only beautiful, but also incredibly talented. The Colorado Springs-based designer started making jewelry while working at a bead store in Monument.  Paid by the inch, Roy learned to make necklaces and lanyards for the shop’s owners. After perfecting her craft, Roy started her own line of jewelry in the summer of 2009 called Lindseymade Originals.

Roy’s favorite pieces to create are necklaces, but I certainly hope she designs more earrings. Based on the photos above, she has an amazing eye for stylish and sophisticated dangles. Roy does an  incredible job creating unique pieces in turquoise and her favorite color, purple. She even designs trendy steampunk and vintage styles, selling them to raise money for charity and pay for her studies at the University of Colorado in Colorado Springs.

Despite running a successful jewelry business , Roy takes the field with the Denver Broncos Cheerleaders, works in the front lobby of the YMCA, dances Zumba and performs in a local community theater. She even finds time to hang with friends, play basketball, swim and bowl. In the little spare time she has left, Roy studies photography and takes in movies. She is a gamer, using her iPad, Nintento DS, laptop and Wii to play whenever she has some extra free moments.

Roy, who was born in 1990 with Down Syndrome, encourages everyone, including children and adults with Down Syndrome, to remember that they can do anything they desire if they work hard and believe in themselves. View her beautiful line of jewelry at www.lindseymadeoriginals.com.
